Dealing with Disappointment

This is a topic that all of us can relate to in some way or another during the last 6 months. Maybe you lost a job, your small business was affected, or even your whole career path was put on hold (hello live theatre, I’m looking at you). Whatever it was, we can all stand by each other and say that we’ve gone through some kind of disappointment in this season. So why haven’t more people reached out about getting through it?

I’m a firm believer in taking a second to feel the weight of it, and acknowledge the hurt, but notice that I said just for a second. The problem that I think most of us have is sitting in the hurt and the disappointment. As hard as it is to remember this sometimes, we are in control of our feelings and which ones we choose to marinate on.

As a follower of Christ, I believe that God is writing my story. I speak to Him quite often about my life plan as I have (sadly too recently) finally given up the grip I had on my life and surrendered it over to Him. There are so many emotions, thoughts, changes, and trust that goes with the release of your plans for your life and choosing His plans for your life, and sometimes it doesn’t go exactly as you thought.

I have recently been asked to be a part of a show again, which could not have come at a better time for someone in the performing industry. It seemed like everything was falling into place and that feeling lasted for a whole week! Funny how life continues to throw curve balls and then you wake up to an email explaining how Covid was furthering it’s destruction on the show that was planned. I felt pretty devastated initially as the words “Unfortunate News” were in the subject of the email, but I couldn’t help but immediately shift my focus towards God and think to myself, “This must mean that something better is coming.”

It’s amazing when you have so much of your faith in God and not in the world, what kind of life you can have. You can choose to have a life full of hope, encouragement, prosperity, and excitement no matter what circumstances come your way. That is the life God WANTS you to have.

I pray today that each one of you who read this have faith in a God who has great plans for your life. I pray that you not only surrender your career plans, but your life as well as we all continue to go through uncertain times, knowing we have a God who is not shaking in the midst of it all.

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Romans 5:3-5 (ESV)
